TV Time is shutting down: the Italian alternative and how to migrate your data

TV Time is closing on July 15, 2026, and will delete all data. Here's how to export your history and import it for free on PopcornCrew: series, episodes watched with real dates, movies, and watchlist.

Update — TV Time permanently closed on July 15, 2026 and export is no longer available. If you had already downloaded the file, the import guide below is still valid. Otherwise, read the updated guide on what to do now.

TV Time is permanently closing on July 15, 2026. After that date, the app and website will stop functioning and all user data will be deleted: years of tracked episodes, followed series, and watchlists will disappear forever. The good news? If you act now, you can save everything and start fresh in just a few minutes. In this guide, we explain how to export your data from TV Time (in two ways) and how to import it into PopcornCrew, the free Italian alternative for tracking TV series and movies.

TV Time is shutting down: what's happening

On July 1, 2026, the TV Time team announced the closure of the service: the app was no longer sustainable as a free product, and the parent company (Whip Media) decided to focus on other products. Dates to mark on your calendar:

  • July 15, 2026: the app and tvtime.com site will stop functioning;
  • after July 15: all personal data will be permanently deleted.

There will be no grace period: if you don't export your data by that date, your viewing history will be lost. Therefore, the first step is exporting, whatever alternative you choose afterward.

First of all: export your data from TV Time immediately

There are two ways to save your history. The quickest and most reliable is a free browser extension (from a computer); alternatively, there's the official TV Time export, which also works from a phone.

Recommended method (from a computer): TV Time Out extension

It's immediate, doesn't freeze, and recognizes titles even more accurately. You'll need a computer with Chrome or Edge.

  1. Install the free TV Time Out extension.
  2. Go to app.tvtime.com and log in with your TV Time account.
  3. Open the extension and press export: download the ZIP with your library.

💡 Extensions do not work on phone browsers: if you're only on a smartphone, use the method below.

Alternatively (also from a phone): official GDPR export

  1. Go to gdpr.tvtime.com/gdpr/self-service and log in with your TV Time account email and password.
  2. Press Generate GDPR Data.
  3. Wait: the generation is asynchronous and these days it may be slow or not start (their servers are under load). You can close the page and return later: when the archive is ready, the Download button will appear. No email will be sent.
  4. Download the gdpr-data.zip file and keep it safe: it contains your entire history.

💡 Did you register with Google or Facebook? On the same page, you'll find the Reset password section: use it to create a password and access the export tool.

How to import TV Time data to PopcornCrew, step by step

Once you've downloaded the ZIP (either from the extension or gdpr-data.zip), the migration literally takes a few minutes:

  1. Create a free account on PopcornCrew (or log in if you already have one).
  2. Go to Settings → Import movies and series and choose TV Time.
  3. Choose what to import: series and movies, only series, or only movies.
  4. Upload the ZIP file and start the import.
  5. Follow the progress bar: at the end, you'll see the report with matched series, episodes marked as watched, and movies added.

The import reconstructs your library as it was:

  • the series with the entire history of watched episodes, including real dates;
  • the status of each series automatically calculated: completed ones in Watched, those halfway in Watchlist with the progress bar;
  • the movies watched (with date) and those to watch;
  • the series you were following but hadn't started yet, in Watchlist.

The automatic matching recognizes almost all titles. We've also solved the trickiest case: long series (like major anime) where the season numbering differs between databases, where episodes were previously lost. Now every episode is mapped precisely, without losses or errors. The few unrecognized titles (usually special content or fan-made that don't exist in official databases) are listed in the final report, so you can add them manually in a snap. And if something goes wrong, you can restart the import with the same file without creating duplicates.

PopcornCrew: the Italian alternative to TV Time

PopcornCrew is a free web app in Italian to track TV series and movies, share what you're watching with friends, and discover what to watch next. All the features a TV Time user expects are there:

  • Episode-by-episode tracking: mark individual episodes, entire seasons, or the whole series; the status (to watch, ongoing, up to date, completed) updates automatically;
  • Upcoming episodes: calendar of upcoming releases of the series you follow and notifications (including push and email) when a new episode is released;
  • Watchlist and custom lists with movies and series together, private or shareable;
  • Social: follow friends, comment, review, and rate series, episodes, and movies, with anti-spoiler protection;
  • Discovery: trends, search, and personalized recommendations;
  • Official import from TV Time (and also from Letterboxd): you don't start from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to import data from TV Time?

Nothing: PopcornCrew is free, including import.

Can I import only TV series, without movies?

Yes. Before uploading the file, choose whether to import series and movies, only series, or only movies.

Are the dates I watched the episodes preserved?

Yes: both the extension and the official export contain the real viewing dates, and PopcornCrew imports them as they were.

What happens if I wait until after July 15, 2026?

The TV Time site and app will stop working, and the data will be deleted: it will no longer be possible to recover your history. The export must be done before that date.

The official TV Time export won't start or is very slow, what should I do?

It happens: these days their servers are under load, and the generation can be slow or get stuck. The quickest solution is to use the TV Time Out extension from a computer, which downloads your data instantly. If you stick with the official export, remember that no email is sent: check the page occasionally, and when it's ready, you'll find the Download button.

Can I use the extension from my phone?

No, extensions only work on a computer browser. From a smartphone, use the official export on gdpr.tvtime.com, which works just as well.

I also use Letterboxd: can I import that too?

Yes, PopcornCrew also imports the export from Letterboxd (movies, ratings, reviews, lists, and favorites).

Don't wait until July 15

To recap: 1) immediately export your data from TV Time (from a computer with the extension, or from a phone with the official export), 2) register for free on PopcornCrew, 3) upload the zip and find your library exactly where you left it, with the trending series ready for your next binge. Welcome home. 🍿
