TV Time Has Shut Down: What to Do Now (With or Without Your Export)

TV Time shut down on July 15, 2026, and user data has been deleted. If you saved the export, you can import everything to PopcornCrew; if not, here's how to start fresh in just a few minutes.

TV Time permanently shut down on July 15, 2026. The app and website are offline, and user data has been deleted from the servers, as announced. If you're here, you're probably wondering what's left of your years of tracked series and episodes. There are two paths, and this guide covers both: if you downloaded the export before the shutdown, you can import everything to PopcornCrew in just a few minutes; if you didn't, the history is not recoverable, but starting over is much faster than you think.

What happened

On July 1, 2026, the TV Time team announced the shutdown of the service: the app was no longer sustainable as a free product. On July 15, the app and website went offline, and as per the official communication, users' personal data was permanently deleted. The export tool (gdpr.tvtime.com) is no longer accessible: it's no longer possible to export anything.

Got the export? Import everything to PopcornCrew

If you downloaded your data before the shutdown, your history is safe. Both formats are fine, just as you downloaded them (without extracting):

  • the official export gdpr-data.zip (requested at the time from gdpr.tvtime.com);
  • the TV Time Out extension ZIP (exported from a computer, named like tvtime-…zip).

💡 Can't remember if you did it? Search for gdpr-data or tvtime in your computer or phone's Download folder: many downloaded it around the announcement and forgot about it.

Step-by-step import

  1. Create a free account on PopcornCrew (or log in if you already have one).
  2. Go to Settings → Import Movies and Series and choose TV Time.
  3. Choose what to import: series and movies, only series, or only movies.
  4. Upload the ZIP file as is and start the import.
  5. Follow the progress bar: at the end, you'll find a report with matched series, marked episodes, and added movies.

The import reconstructs your library as it was: series with the entire history of watched episodes (real dates included), the status of each series calculated automatically (finished in Watched, halfway in Watchlist with the progress bar), watched movies, and those to watch. The matching recognizes almost all titles, including long series with different numbering across databases; the few unrecognized titles end up in the report, ready to be added manually. And if something interrupts, you can restart the import with the same file, without duplicates.

For details, there's also the complete migration guide published before the shutdown.

Don't have the export? The truth, and how to start over

Let's be clear, because there's confusion out there: no app can recover data from TV Time's servers. They have been deleted, and there's no API, archive, or trick to get them back: be wary of anyone promising otherwise. What you can do is start over, and do it quickly:

  1. Sign up for free on PopcornCrew.
  2. Search for the series you're following and mark where you've left off: you can mark entire seasons or the whole series as watched with a single tap, no need to go episode by episode. For ongoing series, the "up to date" status updates automatically.
  3. Add to Watchlist what you wanted to watch: from there, the Upcoming calendar and notifications will take care of new episode releases.

For most people, it takes just ten minutes to get active series back on track. The exact history of past dates unfortunately doesn't return, but the habit of tracking (which is why you used TV Time) starts again immediately. And if you also used Letterboxd for movies, that import is there and complete: movies, ratings, reviews, lists, and favorites.

PopcornCrew: the Italian alternative

PopcornCrew is a free web app in Italian for tracking TV series and movies, sharing what you watch with friends, and discovering what to watch next:

  • Episode-by-episode tracking: mark individual episodes, entire seasons, or the whole series; the status updates automatically;
  • Upcoming episodes: calendar of upcoming releases and notifications (push and email) when a new episode is released;
  • Watchlist and custom lists with movies and series together, private or shareable;
  • Social: follow friends, comment, review, and rate, with anti-spoiler protection;
  • Discovery: trends, search, and personalized recommendations;
  • Import from TV Time and Letterboxd: if you have the files, you don't start from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still export my data from TV Time?

No. Since July 15, 2026, the app, site, and export tool are offline. Only the export downloaded before the shutdown is valid.

I didn't export in time: can I recover my history?

No, and no app can do it: the data has been deleted from TV Time's servers. The only way is to start over, and with quick marking of entire seasons and series, it's a matter of minutes, not hours.

What file should I upload to PopcornCrew?

The export you downloaded, as is and without extracting: gdpr-data.zip or the TV Time Out extension ZIP.

How much does the import cost?

Nothing: PopcornCrew is free, including the import.

Are the dates I watched episodes preserved?

Yes: both export formats contain the real viewing dates, and the import keeps them.

Until when can I import?

Whenever you want: the import on PopcornCrew has no deadlines. Keep the file and import it when you need to.

I also use Letterboxd: can I import that too?

Yes: movies, ratings, reviews, lists, and favorites.

In two minutes

In summary: if you have the export, sign up for free, upload the zip, and find your library where it left off. If you don't have it, sign up anyway, mark the series you're up to date with in one touch, and start from the next episode: the trending series are waiting for your next binge. Welcome home. 🍿
