Horror movies to watch on Netflix

The Conjuring

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren go to help a family that has just moved into an isolated farmhouse, where things are happening that shouldn't. James Wan builds the tension patiently, room by room. The film launched an entire universe of sequels and spin-offs.

It

Seven kids in a small Maine town, the Losers' Club, discover that a clown who feeds on their fears is behind the disappearances of local children. Based on Stephen King's novel, it's also a story about friendship at the age of twelve—and that's part of what makes it scarier than you might expect. It Chapter Two is also on Netflix.

A Quiet Place

The world has been overrun by creatures that hunt by sound, and one family survives by speaking in sign language and walking barefoot. Directed by and starring John Krasinski, with Emily Blunt, this is best watched in the dark—and without crunching popcorn, because silence is part of the film. The sequel is also on Netflix.

Scream

A masked killer terrorizes a small American town, calling victims before attacking to quiz them about horror movies. Wes Craven pokes fun at the genre's rules while playing by them, and it still works brilliantly. It's the perfect movie for a night in with friends.

Nosferatu

Robert Eggers remakes the 1922 silent classic. In 19th-century Germany, a young bride is haunted by the vampire Count Orlok, who leaves Transylvania to find her. It's a slow, deeply dark Gothic horror starring Lily-Rose Depp and an unrecognizable Bill Skarsgård.

Frankenstein

Mary Shelley's novel, reimagined by Guillermo del Toro, who has dreamed of making this film his whole life: Oscar Isaac plays scientist Victor Frankenstein, and Jacob Elordi is the Creature. More tragedy than terror, it's the most beautiful and richly imagined version in years—and a Netflix original.

Horror movies to watch on Prime Video

Get Out

A young Black man goes to meet his girlfriend's parents, who are white, rich and incredibly welcoming. A little too welcoming. Jordan Peele's debut is a horror movie about racism that never stops being a horror movie, and it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Train to Busan

An outbreak turns South Korea into a zombie-infested country, and a father and his young daughter find themselves trapped on a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan. The pace is relentless, the zombies are fast, and the ending is genuinely moving. Many consider it the best zombie movie of the past twenty years.

It Follows

After spending the night with a guy, a student discovers that a presence is following her—slowly, relentlessly, wherever she goes. It can take anyone's face. A brilliantly simple idea that leaves you with a creeping sense of dread that's hard to shake.

[REC]

A TV reporter follows a team of firefighters into an apartment building in Barcelona, which is placed under quarantine with them trapped inside. The whole film is shot as if through her camera, making it one of the scariest found-footage movies ever made.

The Cabin in the Woods

Five friends in an isolated cabin: it sounds like the setup for a thousand horror movies, and that's exactly what the film wants you to think. Written by Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon, it's best watched knowing as little as possible.

Sinister

True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt, played by Ethan Hawke, moves his family into a house where another family was murdered. In the attic, he finds a box of old film reels. If you're after pure, no-jokes terror, this is the nastiest film on the list.

Horror movies to watch on Disney+

Alien

The crew of a commercial spaceship answers a distress call and brings something aboard. Ridley Scott made a horror movie set in space, and nearly fifty years later, it still holds up. If you've never seen it, Halloween is the perfect excuse.

The Fly

Scientist Seth Brundle, played by Jeff Goldblum, tests his teleportation machine on himself without realizing a fly has entered the pod. David Cronenberg turns the premise into a love story that slowly becomes a nightmare, with special effects that won an Oscar for Best Makeup.

Ready or Not

On her wedding night, a bride has to play hide-and-seek with her husband's incredibly rich family, who are hunting her down with weapons. Fierce and funny in equal measure, with a pitch-perfect Samara Weaving, it's the movie to watch when you want to scream and laugh in the same night.

Smile

A psychiatrist witnesses a patient's suicide. The patient had been smiling in an unnatural way, and from that day on, the psychiatrist starts seeing the same smile everywhere. Packed with jump scares, it's one of the most-watched horror movies of recent years.

Alien: Romulus

A group of young colonists boards an abandoned space station to steal what they need to escape their planet—and finds something they weren't supposed to. Fede Álvarez brings the franchise back to the claustrophobic terror of the first film. You can enjoy it without having seen the others.

Horror comedies for people who don't like being scared

Not everyone wants to sleep with the lights on after watching a Halloween movie. These are horror movies in name more than spirit: there's blood, zombies and vampires, but above all, they're funny.

Zombieland (Netflix)

A young man with a long list of phobias travels across a zombie-infested America, following a set of survival rules alongside a companion who's afraid of nothing. The sequel is also on Netflix.

Shaun of the Dead (Prime Video)

A directionless London shop assistant realizes a day too late that the city is crawling with zombies. Edgar Wright's horror comedy, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, has become a classic.

What We Do in the Shadows (Prime Video)

A mockumentary about four vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand and arguing over whose turn it is to do the dishes. Created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, it inspired the TV series of the same name.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Disney+)

A stranded couple knocks on the wrong castle door—the one belonging to Dr. Frank-N-Furter. It's more musical than horror, and the ultimate Halloween party movie: some fans have been watching it and singing along from memory for fifty years.

Movies to watch with kids

Frankenweenie (Disney+)

A science-loving boy brings his dog, Sparky, back to life. Tim Burton remakes his 1984 short film in black-and-white stop-motion. It's sweet, a little macabre and perfect for introducing younger kids to the genre.

Gremlins (Prime Video)

A boy gets an adorable little creature as a gift, along with three rules: keep it out of bright light, don't get it wet, and never feed it after midnight. Naturally, the rules get broken. Some scenes are still scary, so it's best for kids aged ten and up.
